Eihwaz - Rune Number 13
Original meaning: The meaning of Eihwaz is yew. The yew tree is associated with Ull, the god of hunting, because yew wood was used to make bows. This tree represents the world tree, Yiggdrasil, where Odin hung to gain knowledge. Its roots were supposed to go right down to the underworld and it was reckoned to hold the key to the mystery of Life and Death. Because of these connections Eihwaz is a Rune of personal protection, wisdom, death and regeneration. Eihwaz, as the 13th Rune, is sometimes regarded as the unlucky Rune.
Interpretation: Dependability. Flexibility. The need to protect one's self. Something from one's past.
Reversed: An old problem returning. Incorrectly fond memories of the past. A sense of loss.
