Thurisaz - Rune Number 3
Original meaning: The exact meaning of Thurisaz has been lost but it is felt to have unpleasant associations. Trolls, demons and giants such as Thursur have all been linked to this Rune. The overall meaning is now taken to be "thorn", something sharp and unpleasant. The concept of a thorny hedge, enclosure or barrier lends this Rune a power which can be used for defence or destruction. Thor was associated with sacred enclosures, and so has links with Thurisaz.
Interpretation: Thurisaz stands for the chaos which follows the tearing down of the old in order to make room for the new. After destruction comes regeneration and the need to embrace the future. It can also indicate the darker side of someone's nature and the perverse combination of pain and pleasure. Thurisaz suggests that the questioner accepts his/her darker side and that it is part of the struggle of humanity to control and overcome it.
Reversed: Obstinacy and refusal to listen to information and advice. The end of a run of good luck. Proceed with caution or maybe take no action for a while.
