The Chariot - Card 7 in The Major Arcana
An imposing, determined-looking man in a canopied chariot. The chariot is drawn by two sphinxes; one black, one white. There is a winged symbol and shield on the front of the chariot. Behind the chariot there is a walled city.
It is possible that originally the chariot may have depicted a pageant wagon used for mediaeval plays and that the chariot driver was intended to be the king from the Dance of Death. There are also suggestions that the charioteer may have been meant to represent Mars, the Roman god of war.
Another possible interpretation could be that the charioteer represents Osiris in his war chariot. The white and black sphinxes stand for good and evil. The Chariot is card number 7 the number of self expression and independent action.
