Empress - Card 3 in The Major Arcana

A golden haired woman wearing a long, loose flowered dress and ornate crown. In her right hand she holds a golden sceptre. Her chair is soft looking and luxurious and set in beautiful countryside. By the side of the chair is a heart shaped shield inscribed with the astrological symbol of Venus. In the foreground of the picture is a field of corn.

The number of this card (3) represents harmony, the resolution between two by the addition of a third (birth) (the Empress's loose dress probably signifies pregnancy).

The Empress is surrounded by the bounty of nature and she represents fecundity and the ease and joy which comes from being at one with the natural world.

The character of the Empress probably originates from the ancient theme of the Earth Mother Goddess or Goddess of the Harvest who occurs in all ancient cultures.

This card in a reading:

Upright: The Empress represents all the good, warm intuitive sides of womanhood. She is the caring, loving mother, the vessel of the creation of human life. She also presides over the natural production which feeds mankind. She can symbolise a real woman who is like this or she can indicate that these are the feelings that the querent should tap into.

Reversed: Possibly a dominant mother figure. Poverty and the loss of intuitive gifts can also be indicated by the reversal of this card.

Summary: Get in touch with nature.
