The Five of Cups in The Minor Arcana

The Five of Cups depicts a solitary figure standing alone near a river. The figure is draped in a long black cloak. Three upturned cups, wine spilling from them, are to the left of the picture and two cups stand upright behind and to the left of the cloaked person.

Along the river is a white bridge and over the river in the distance is a castle-like building surrounded by trees. The bridge appears to lead to the building.

When the Five of Cups turns up in a reading it signifies loss. It can mean a loss that has already taken place and all the emotions that have come from that or it can mean a loss yet to come. This card can stand for emotional loss, financial loss or anything that the querent has not or will not succeed in.

However, two cups do remain standing (still full of wine); only three have lost all their contents. There is the suggestion of loss but not total loss - maybe something has been learnt or salvaged from the unhappy experience. However sad, loss can often lead to new beginnings.

When the querent sees the Five of Cups they may understand what it refers to or they may need to use it as a warning and act accordingly.

Summary: Don't place that bet.
