The Fool - Card 0 in The Major Arcana.
A young man dressed in an elegant tunic is walking along on a bright sunny day. Over his right shoulder he carries a bundle tied to the end of a staff and in his right hand he carries a white rose. His head is in the air and he doesn't notice the approaching sheer drop from the edge of the cliff towards which he is walking.
A small dog at his heels jumps up at him as if to warn him of the impending drop.
Since Mediaeval times Kings had fools or jesters. The 'idiot savant' fool enjoyed a privileged place in the hierarchy of court. He alone could hold up the mirror of reality to his master. The Fool represents innocence and the chaos which is the alternative to the rule of the king. He is the foil for the ordered establishment.
The bundle on the stick is probably a representation of the bladder on a stick carried by jesters at court. The white rose is a metaphor for the Fool's soul which will accompany him on his journey of self enlightenment.
