The Four of Cups in The Minor Arcana

In the Four of Cups a young man sits crossed legged, his arms folded. He is sitting on a grassy mound beneath a tree. He looks as if he could be asleep, he certainly looks withdrawn. Three cups stand in the foreground and a right hand emerging from a cloud hands him a fourth cup. The young man appears so self absorbed that he does not notice the proffered cup.

When the Four of Cups appears in a reading the querent should ask themselves whether they are being too self absorbed. Are they missing a chance that is being offered to them? Have they drawn so much within themselves that they are not noticing the support, the emotions (the wine in the cup) that are being proffered by others? This card can also suggest the need to withdraw in order to renew emotional energy. Everybody needs to do this at some time in their lives.

The questioner also needs to be aware that the Four of Cups can signify weariness with life and a lack of contentment and motivation. They should look at what is going on in their personal environment to find out why they feel the need to cut themselves off from the world and whether or not this is helping their situation.

Summary: Remember the gift horse.
