The Hermit - Card 9 in The Major Arcana

An old, white bearded man, head bent, wearing a shabby-looking robe. He holds a lantern with one hand. the lantern appears to be lighting his way. In the other hand he holds a staff which is as tall as he is. He appears to be standing in the snow.

Hermits were contemplative, sometimes religious people who lived on their own in remote places. They were often regarded as being wise and prescient.

In old Tarot decks this card was called "Devourer of Things" and "Old Man" (Old Father Time). There are links with the Roman god Saturn who in Greek mythology was called Chronos (the personification of Time). Saturn has also been identified with the virtue Prudence.
