High Priestess - Card 2 in The Major Arcana

A long haired woman dressed in flowing robes. She wears a heavy looking headdress and a crucifix. She holds a large book on her lap. At her feet, among her robes is a crescent moon.

There is a veil behind the High Priestess's throne and the Priestess sits between two pillars.

There has always been speculation that the High Priestess in fact represents Pope Joan. Some have suggested that she is Isis, who is usually represented reading a large book. The High Priestess's hat however does look like the Papal headgear. The Moon at her feet could suggest that she represents Hathar, goddess of the Moon and guide to the dead.

The two pillars represent the negative and positive upon which the universe is based and the veil behind the High Priestess's throne hides the entrance to the psyche. The conscious mind must pass through this doorway to access the unconscious and release its powers.

This card in a reading:

Upright: The High Priestess can represent a woman in the life of the querent. She is wise and intuitive and can help with her wisdom. She is the link between the conscious and unconscious world. Thus this card is a sign that the querent should trust his/her inner feelings.

Reversed: If the querent is a man this card reversed could indicate a woman who is a bad influence on him. It can also warn against ignoring good advice and allowing the emotions too free a rein.

Summary: Study your innermost feelings.
