Judgement - Card 20 in The Major Arcana

A winged angel blows her trumpet to awaken the dead on earth. The golden trumpet has a white, red, crossed flag attached to it. Below on Earth the naked dead arising from their graves with arms raised in supplication. In the distance huge waves seem to be approaching and some of the dead are rising up out of the sea.

The flag show that the angel is Michael and symbolises the meeting place of all opposites. Waite based this card on the earlier Marseille Tarot deck which depicts a single angel.

Judicium was a group of Mystery plays. When they were performed in York the performance took place on a pageant wagon which had trap doors for the "dead" to rise up through.

The sea which is half way between the Earth and the sky stands for the traditional stage between life and death.
