Justice - Card 11 in The Major Arcana

A crowned male figure sitting on a red, draped throne. The man wears a red robe braided with gold. In the right hand the man holds a sword upright and in the left he holds a pair of scales. There is a stone pillar on each side of the throne.

The figure of Justice is traditionally a woman, one of the four Virtues along with Temperance, Fortitude and Prudence. These virtues were eventually adopted by the Christian church and added to by the Apostle Paul with Faith, Hope and Charity.

The Justice card probably originated from the personification of Justice who would have appeared in mediaeval morality plays and who was a very well known figure in the 14th and 15th centuries. The scales she carries are the scales of logic and the sword is the sword of Justice. The origin of the figure of Justice has variously been identified as the Greek goddess Themis or alternatively Astrarea, the daughter of Zeus and Themis. Astrarea is also still familiar today as Virgo, one of the signs of the Zodiac.
