The Wheel of Fortune- Card 10 in The Major Arcana
In the centre of the card is an orange coloured wheel. On the right hand side of the wheel is a dog-like creature lying along the edge of the wheel and on the left hand side is a snake travelling downwards. The wheel is in the sky surrounded by clouds. Sitting on top of the wheel is a sphinx holding a sword. Above and to the left is an angel holding an open book and to the right is a griffin also holding an open book. In the bottom left of the card there is a winged cow and to the right a winged lion.
Fortuna was a Roman goddess who by mediaeval times had evolved into Dame Fortune. Fortuna could bestow riches upon those whom she favoured. Traditionally however Fortune is a blind goddess who gives and takes good luck indiscriminately.
The dog-like creature is the Cynocephalus or Dog-headed Baboon which was sacred to Toth, the Lord of Magic.
The Wheel of Fortune is divided into four sections, each of which represents a different phase of passing time.
