The World - Card 21 in The Major Arcana

The figure of a naked woman draped in a long scarf and holding two batons appears within a large, leafy wreath. The wreath is bound at end by ribbon. The woman appears to be running. Above the wreath on the right hand side is the head of an eagle. On the left hand side is a man's head. Below the wreath to the left is a cow's head and to the right the head of a lion.

This card was adapted from the Marseille Tarot deck by Pamela Coleman-Smith. The four heads are the heads of the four Holy Living Creatures of Ezekiel. Waite believed the design represented a notion that "the perfection of the cosmos and the state of the soul become conscious of the divine wisdom". The figure in the Vieville 17th century Tarot deck is in fact male, not female and this could be extrapolated to suggest that the figure represents Christ. This male figure wears a cloak and holds a sceptre, possibly representing the final tableau of the mystery play cycle.

This card in a reading:

Upright: The World spins constantly in the heavens and left to its own devices all proceeds in perfect harmony. This card represents fulfillment and the sense that all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds. It can indicate the success which can come to the querent as long as he/she opens up to all the opportunities on offer.

Reversed: Inertia, fixity, stagnation, permanence.

Summary: Enjoy!
